The weather has been lovely this week, so I planned to walk from home to Satwa & neighboring areas. I picked up two cameras from my shelf, dumped a few films into a tote bag & off I went. Arrived in Satwa, only to realize I had the wrong bag. I also had my house keys in the other tote, which meant I was stuck outside until mama returns. El-hamd-li-Allah, my phone was in my hand, thus the instagrams. The walk was long. Accompanied with a cool-breeze & custard dumplings, I returned home stuffed & content.

I broke my fast that day at the backstreets of Bur Dubai. Greeted by curious eyes, the generosity of the people there was overwhelming. I entered a small laundry room where three men where huddled close over two ironing stations, & asked if I could take photos of them. We communicated by signs as no common language was shared. They then wouldn't let me go before having a seat & having chai. I was in a hurry & missed the opportunity (surprising myself.. I never say no to karak!)

At every turn, more & more kind faces greeted (& a couple of "You Muslim? I'm Muslim. Can I have some money?" peeps). My camera malfunctioned there, so missed capturing Iftars. I'll try visiting again.

Humaid Al Razzi is a man that 'sings', a more accurate term would be 'yshel' -from Shalla, a traditional form of song. I was going to direct a series of videos & he was going to perform 'shallat' related to the desert & the travels taken on camel back (below, you'll find an example of what I recorded with him on my first visit).

As for the notebook in hand; he took this out of his pocket & raised it to his eyes, almost touching his nose. This man can look at a number from his book and tell you who it belongs to. He had to write mine too, & as the others, with no name attached. Amazed!
